You Need a Church

Why we can't follow Jesus alone.

Christianity is not a solo sport.

The big idea

There's no such thing as a Christian on their own. We were made for the body.

What does “You Need a Church” walk through?

1

Don't Forsake Gathering

Hebrews 10:25 · KJV

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another.

In plain English

Don't drift away from gathering with other believers. Encourage each other.

2

The Body Image

Paul calls us a body. A hand cut off the body dies. Trying to be a Christian disconnected from a local church is like trying to be a hand without an arm. You need the rest of the body to live.

3

You Are the Body

1 Corinthians 12:27 · KJV

Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

In plain English

You are part of Christ's body — and the body needs every part.

“Imperfect church beats no church. Find one. Stay.”

4

On the Imperfection

Every church is full of broken people because every church is made of people. That's not a bug — that's the point. The body of Christ is real-life flawed humans growing together. Find one and start.

Pray

Lord, give me a church family. Help me commit, even imperfectly. Teach me to love a body that includes annoying, beautiful, broken people — like me.

Write it down

Are you part of a real, regular church community? If not, what's the smallest first step you could take this month?

You finished: You Need a Church

You can't follow Jesus alone. The body is messy and necessary. Find your spot.

Which passages does this journey use?

2 passages, drawn from Hebrews 10:25, 1 Corinthians 12:27. Every verse appears here in the King James text with a plain-English line beside it, so you can read it without a commentary open. Allow about 5 minutes for the whole thing, or 6 short sittings.

  • Hebrews 10:25
  • 1 Corinthians 12:27

Read any of these in full on the complete KJV, or look the wording up independently at Blue Letter Bible.
