Walking with the Spirit

Letting the Holy Spirit shape you.

The Holy Spirit isn't a vague feeling — he's a person.

The big idea

The Christian life isn't powered by your willpower. It's powered by the Spirit.

What does “Walking with the Spirit” walk through?

1

Walk in the Spirit

Galatians 5:25 · KJV

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

In plain English

If the Spirit is alive in you, let your life look like it.

2

Not Effort, Surrender

We try to live the Christian life by effort. The New Testament keeps saying: walk by the Spirit. Surrender. Tune in. The fruit grows when you stop straining and start trusting.

3

The Comforter

John 14:26 · KJV

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things.

In plain English

The Holy Spirit — the Helper God sends — will teach you everything you need to know.

“You can't manufacture fruit. You can stay close to the vine.”

4

Tune In

Walking with the Spirit is mostly attention. Pause. Pray. Notice the nudge. Ask the question. Wait. The Spirit speaks softer than you think — but more often than you notice.

Pray

Holy Spirit, teach me to listen. Take what I'm white-knuckling and teach me to walk. Grow your fruit in me — slowly, surely.

Write it down

Where in your life are you trying hard in your own strength? What might it look like to surrender that to the Spirit?

You finished: Walking with the Spirit

You weren't meant to do this on your own. The Spirit is in you. Walk with him.

Which passages does this journey use?

2 passages, drawn from Galatians 5:25, John 14:26. Every verse appears here in the King James text with a plain-English line beside it, so you can read it without a commentary open. Allow about 5 minutes for the whole thing, or 6 short sittings.

  • Galatians 5:25
  • John 14:26

Read any of these in full on the complete KJV, or look the wording up independently at Blue Letter Bible.
