The Names of God
Who he says he is.
Different names of God reveal different parts of his character.
The big idea
God revealed himself by many names so we'd see him from many angles.
What does “The Names of God” walk through?
I AM
Exodus 3:14 · KJV
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM.
In plain English
God told Moses: I AM. The eternal one. Beginning and end. Always was, always will be.
I AM
When Moses asked God's name, God didn't give a noun. He gave a verb. I AM. Existence itself. Whatever you need today — peace, provision, strength — God is. Fill in the blank yourself.
The LORD My Shepherd
Psalm 23:1 · KJV
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In plain English
God guides and cares for you like a good shepherd. With him, you have what you truly need.
“Knowing God's names is knowing his nature.”
Different Angles
Yahweh-Jireh: God provides. Yahweh-Shalom: God is peace. Yahweh-Rapha: God heals. Each name is a window. When you're hurting, you don't need a generic God — you need the specific aspect that matches your need. He has a name for that.
Pray
Father, when I need provision, you are Jireh. When I need peace, you are Shalom. When I need healing, you are Rapha. Reveal the part of yourself I need today.
Write it down
What name of God do you most need to know today? Why?
You finished: The Names of God
He's bigger than one word. Get to know all the names. Each one is a doorway in.
Which passages does this journey use?
2 passages, drawn from Exodus 3:14, Psalm 23:1. Every verse appears here in the King James text with a plain-English line beside it, so you can read it without a commentary open. Allow about 5 minutes for the whole thing, or 6 short sittings.
- Exodus 3:14
- Psalm 23:1
