Knowing What to Do Next

Discernment for the foggy days.

When the path forward isn't clear.

The big idea

God gives you light for the next step. Not the whole staircase.

What does “Knowing What to Do Next” walk through?

1

A Lamp for the Step

Psalm 119:105 · KJV

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

In plain English

Your word lights up just enough to take the next step.

2

Just the Next Step

Most of us want a 10-year plan. God usually gives us one foot of light. He's not being stingy — he's training us to keep walking with him. If you knew everything ahead of time, you wouldn't need him.

3

Ask for Wisdom

James 1:5 · KJV

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

In plain English

When you don’t know what to do, ask God for wisdom. He gives generously without shaming you.

“Discernment is the next obedience, not the whole map.”

4

Three Filters

When unsure: 1) Does it match scripture? 2) Does it have peace under examination? 3) Do trusted Christians I respect agree it's wise? When all three nod, walk forward. If they don't, wait.

Pray

Father, I don't need the whole plan. Just the next step. Light it up. Give me wisdom and peace to take it.

Write it down

What decision is in front of you? What's the next obedient step you can see?

You finished: Knowing What to Do Next

You don't need the map. You need the next step. Take it. He'll show you the next.

Which passages does this journey use?

2 passages, drawn from Psalm 119:105, James 1:5. Every verse appears here in the King James text with a plain-English line beside it, so you can read it without a commentary open. Allow about 5 minutes for the whole thing, or 6 short sittings.

  • Psalm 119:105
  • James 1:5

Read any of these in full on the complete KJV, or look the wording up independently at Blue Letter Bible.
