How The First Church Lived

Four habits and nothing clever.

On the rhythms the early church actually kept.

The big idea

The fastest-growing movement in history ran on four ordinary habits.

Opening scripture

“They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Acts 2:42

What does “How The First Church Lived” walk through?

1

They Devoted Themselves

Acts 2:42 · KJV

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

In plain English

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

2

Four Things, Repeated

Teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, prayer. No strategy, no innovation — just four things done constantly. Devotion here means stubborn regularity, not intensity.

3

Every Day, House To House

Acts 2:46 · KJV

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

In plain English

Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.

4

Mostly In Homes

The temple courts get a mention; the homes get the detail. Meals, ordinary rooms, glad hearts. The gathering everyone imagines was mostly people eating together.

“Nothing on the list would impress anyone. That is probably why it worked.”

5

Keep Meeting

Hebrews 10:25 · KJV

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

In plain English

Don't give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing. Encourage one another, all the more as the day approaches.

6

Faithful In Little

Luke 16:10 · KJV

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

In plain English

Whoever can be trusted with very little can be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will be dishonest with much.

Pray

God, give me stubborn ordinary habits rather than good intentions. Amen.
