The Word With No English Equal

Hesed, and why translators disagree.

One Hebrew word that needed six English ones.

The big idea

Hesed appears about 250 times in the Old Testament, and English still has no single word for it.

Opening scripture

“Because of the Lord's mercies we are not consumed — his compassion never runs out.”
Lamentations 3:22

What does “The Word With No English Equal” walk through?

1

Word study · Hebrew

חֶסֶד hesed

Rendered: mercy / lovingkindness / steadfast love

A loyal, committed kindness shown by someone who has made a promise and refuses to break it. It combines love with obligation — which is why English keeps needing two words to carry it, and why different Bibles render it differently.

Where it shows up: Lamentations 3:22 sits in a book of national grief: it is because of the Lord's hesed that we are not consumed. The word appears at the lowest possible moment, describing why things did not end.

2

Why Translations Disagree

If you compare Bibles on the same verse you will find mercy, lovingkindness, steadfast love, unfailing love. They are not competing — each is grabbing one edge of a word bigger than any of them.

3

Not Consumed

Lamentations 3:22 · KJV

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

In plain English

Because of the Lord's mercies we are not consumed — his compassion never runs out.

4

New Every Morning

Lamentations 3:23 · KJV

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

In plain English

They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

5

Loyalty Is The Core

The reason hesed cannot simply be translated love is that English love has drifted toward feeling. Hesed is closer to a promise being kept when keeping it is costly and no one would blame you for walking.

רַחוּם rachum

Rendered: compassionate

Built from the root for womb, so the compassion it describes is the gut-level kind — the ache a parent feels rather than a decision politely made. It sits alongside hesed in God's own description of himself.

Where it shows up: In Exodus 34:6 God announces his own name to Moses using both words together: compassionate and gracious, abounding in hesed. It is the closest thing to a self-portrait in the Old Testament.

He Rejoices Over You

Zephaniah 3:17 · KJV

The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

In plain English

The Lord your God is with you, a mighty saviour. He will delight in you with joy, quiet you with his love, and rejoice over you with singing.

“The word most used to describe God's character is one we cannot fully translate. That is worth sitting with.”

Pray

God, thank you for a loyalty that does not depend on my performance. Amen.
