The Mirror And The Word

Two things telling you who you are.

On body image and the voice you believe.

The big idea

A mirror can describe you. It cannot define you.

Opening scripture

“I praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful — I know that full well.”
Psalms 139:14

What does “The Mirror And The Word” walk through?

1

Fearfully Made

Psalms 139:14 · KJV

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

In plain English

I praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful — I know that full well.

2

Wonder, Not Vanity

David is not complimenting himself. He is praising the maker. Seeing yourself as made shifts the question from am I enough to who made me and why.

3

In His Image

Genesis 1:27 · KJV

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

In plain English

So God created human beings in his own image — in the image of God he created them, male and female.

“You are not a problem to be fixed before you can be loved.”

4

A Temple, Not An Object

1 Corinthians 6:19 · KJV

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

In plain English

Your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit who lives in you. You belong to God, not to yourself.

5

Your Body Is Not The Enemy

Scripture never treats the body as shameful. It treats it as a dwelling. That is a far higher view than the one the mirror offers on a bad day.

6

Known Completely

Psalms 139:1 · KJV

O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

In plain English

Lord, you have searched me and you know me.

Pray

God, quiet the voice in the mirror with the one that made me. Amen.

Write it down

What do you say to yourself in the mirror that God would never say?

Made on purpose

Not a draft. Not an accident.
