Digital Sabbath

Practising a day that does not need you.

On rest, and why stopping is an act of trust.

The big idea

Rest is not a reward for finishing. It is a declaration that the world holds together without you.

What does “Digital Sabbath” walk through?

1

Six Days, Not Seven

Exodus 20:9 · KJV

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

In plain English

Work for six days and do everything you need to do.

2

A Limit You Did Not Set

The command assumes work is good and then draws a line through it anyway. The line is the gift. Without one, work expands until it owns everything — and a phone has no natural edge at all.

3

Presence, Then Rest

Exodus 33:14 · KJV

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

In plain English

The Lord said: my presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.

“Stopping feels irresponsible right up until you discover the world kept turning.”

4

Come And Rest

Matthew 11:28 · KJV

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

In plain English

Jesus invites worn-out people to come to him. He offers real rest for the soul.

5

Rest Is Not Emptiness

Jesus does not offer a blank day. He offers himself. A sabbath spent restlessly refreshing is not rest — it is the same work in a softer chair.

6

Be Still

Psalms 46:10 · KJV

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

In plain English

Be still, and know that I am God.

Pray

Jesus, I am afraid that if I stop, something will fall. Teach me that you are already holding it. Amen.

Write it down

What would you have to trust God with in order to stop for one day?

Try one hour

A whole day is a big ask. Start with an hour your phone does not get.

Which passages does this journey use?

4 passages, drawn from Exodus 20:9, Exodus 33:14, Matthew 11:28, Psalms 46:10. Every verse appears here in the King James text with a plain-English line beside it, so you can read it without a commentary open. Allow about 7 minutes for the whole thing, or 8 short sittings.

  • Exodus 20:9
  • Exodus 33:14
  • Matthew 11:28
  • Psalms 46:10

Read any of these in full on the complete KJV, or look the wording up independently at Blue Letter Bible.
